Episode On Boston Legal With A Mention Of Umbilical Cord Blood…With A Twist
I just saw an episode of Boston Legal, where there was a father with a serious diagnosis of multiple myeloma and had 6 monhts to live.
And he required a perfectly matched donor of blood stem cells.
He and his wife, now in the process of divorce, stored their son's umbilical cord blood in a cord blood bank.
Problem was, the cord blood was stored in the mother's name only, and she knows the situation… but she won't give him the cord blood.
Was it because she wants to keep it for their son for a possible use in future, though her husband needs it now?
Well, it was because he was actually not the father, her secret…
In real life, cord blood is used without it being a perfect match, though of course a perfect match may yield better results, as it does in traditional bone marrow transplantation.
It is still under medical investigation the outcomes of cord blood transplantation when compared to bone marrow transplantation in each specific cancer or leukemia that requires blood stem cell donation.
But one of the keys to cord blood donation may rely on the relative ease in which cord blood can be donated.
It's interesting though to see cord blood making it to mainstream series.
